FIRST TIME HOMEBUYER CREDIT IRS FORM 5405
As a reminder, Form 5405 (First Time Homebuyer Credit) will not be allowed to be electronically filed for the entire 2010 filing season. This means that an original 2009 federal return that includes the Form 5405 must be filed on paper.
With the release of the updated Form 5405 on January 15 the IRS announced that returns that include the Form 5405 will not begin to be processed by the IRS until mid-February.
As explained in the revised Form 5405 instructions, certain documentation that shows proof of when the home was purchased and the sales price such as the settlement statement must be attached to the return or the credit will not be allowed.
Taxpayers that are eligible for the new $6,500 long-term resident credit must also attach documentation that shows that they resided in the old residence for a five-consecutive year period during the previous eight years ending on the purchase date of the new home.
For more detailed information see the Form 5405 instructions or IR-2010-6 available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
